Patrol Squadron Four Seven


Commander James R. Imlah of Newport, Oregon graduated from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

He attended Officer Candidate School in 2000, was commissioned an Ensign, and shortly thereafter, earned his Wings of Gold. He reported to Patrol Squadron ONE (VP 1), based in Whidbey Island, Washington, where he earned qualifications as Mission Commander and Instructor Pilot. He served as Pilot Training Officer, Readiness Officer, and Assistant Training Officer. He completed two deployments with the “Screaming Eagles” of VP 1, including a FIFTH Fleet deployment in the opening days of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM where he conducted 20 combat missions.

CDR Imlah then attended the Weapons Tactics Instructor (WTI) course and reported to CTF-67 in Sigonella, Italy, where he performed as Staff WTI, Exercise Plans Officer, and Black Sea Desk Officer. During his tenure, he planned over 15 multi-national exercise and detachments to Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Russia.

He then served as a "Shooter" onboard USS JOHN C STENNIS. His duties included Hangar Deck Division Officer, Damage Control Division Officer, TOPCAT, and Mini-boss. It was with the Sailors of the JCS that he completed his third deployment .

CDR Imlah then reported to Patrol Squadron 40 as a Department Head, where he served as the Operations Officer, Training Officer, and Tactics Officer. During this tour, he completed his fourth and fifth deployments, to FIFTH Fleet and SEVENTH Fleet.

He the reported to NORAD and USNORTHCOM where he served as the Command Electronic Warfare Officer and Division Exercise Planner within the J-39 Information Operations Division.

CDR Imlah is currently the Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron 47 Golden Swordsmen. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various other campaign, service, and unit awards.
